There is nothing worse than going to see a movie that is epic in feel with great actors, and the promise of a good story based on a well known legend, just to see it dragged down by a slow moving plot. I actually fell asleep during a certain portion of the movie.
The movie is “Robin Hood.“ It stars such luminaries as Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett , Max von Sydow and William Hurt. The story focuses on how Robin Hood became the Robin of the legend we are all familiar with in stories and mythology.
The film is beautiful to watch it in its gritty portrayal of Great Britain during that time period. I think that some of the “slow mo” archery special effects were a little over done. The battle scenes were some of the most exciting parts of the movie. The acting was stellar.
However, there were really slow, dragging parts of the movie that completely destroyed the cadence of the film. It became boring at parts.
I came away feeling disappointed at a movie I expected so much more from with the caliber of talent associated with it.
With Taylor Swift recently sweeping many music awards this past year including the Grammys, the “Reign of the Young” in the music industry continues to be in full force with the billboard chart topping numbers of Justin Bieber.
Only 15 years old and from Canada , Bieber got noticed on You Tube after posting videos of his own renditions of songs by Usher and other notables. He soon was signed with Island Records.
Justin Bieber and Usher
His debut album ” My World” had several tracks that still appears in most of the top music charts. His sophomore album ” My World 2.0 ” is set to be released March 23rd. Pre-sales already has it primed to be a mega hit.
A 4.0 student, Bieber, who has an enormous tween following has ambitions to go to college and to also develop a significant career in the music industry.
The show continues to be a cultural phenomenon with its incorporation of music, comedy and drama. Recently garnering a Golden Globe for Best Television Series, Comedy the show will return to Fox TV on April 13th. Here are some musical highlights starting off with their rendition on Defying Gravity.
Jordan and Daniel Pious , from Barrington, Rhode Island, will be one of the pair of the new competitors in the next season of Amazing Race set to kick off on Sunday, February 14th on CBS.
Openly Gay, Jordan has dreamed of being on the show and is quite enthusiastic for the adventure he and his brother is embarking on in this race. His older straight brother, Daniel, is out of his comfort zone and is coming along to support his brother’s dream.
It already has the makings of a great storyline and perhaps some drama that can only arise out of this unique sibling combination.
The Amazing Race is one of my favorite TV shows because of the unique places the contestants get to travel to and also because of the race itself.
I will be tuning in this season. I hope you do, too.
Taylor Lautner, maybe a werewolf in the most popular vampire movie of the season but he is definitely the breakout star. His Hollywood hunk good looks that has been the biggest driving force eclipsing even the popular characters of the series Bella and Edward.
He plays Jacob Black, who is in love with Bella, but is in the tribe of werewolves . This makes for the compelling push and pull between the enmity that exist between the vampires and werewolves.
Interestingly enough, it has become a marketeer’s dream for the film, since Lautner’s fan base has grown and pitted him against the popular Robert Pattinson. This has made the feverish hunger for the opening of the movie “The Twilight Saga New Moon“ even more epic.
Lautner’s star is on the rise and, by all indications, is going to surpass Pattinson who has not seemed as accessible to the fans.
There is a new kid on the Late Night Show circuit and she has turn it upside down and put life into the genre. I wish it was not only on on Saturday nights. It is the Wanda Sykes Show.
Yes, there is an Open Bar on the set. Yes there is a super size Vanna White type Drag Queen assistant named Portia. Yes, she has prolific sidekick, Keith Robinson. However, it is the no holds bar comedic style that is signature Wanda that makes this show work and makes it so fresh. It is also a very liberal oasis on a network called Fox.
Sykes offers a catharsis of sorts for a nation wearied by the barrage of news from economic turmoil to foreign policy debates. Her humor is biting and intelligent. I found myself just laughing and enjoying the Wanda Sykes ride . I mean I have not enjoyed a late night show like this one for a long time.
We need her voice and I hope she is around for a long time.
I have never been excited to see a film like I am excited to see “Precious” which premieres in November of this year. Based on the novel ” Push” by Sapphire, this film is not about special effects or an epic or an over the top comedy, it is a small film about a human being who rises above the worst of circumstances.
There is so much buzz from the pre-screenings of the movie that have come out of independent film festivals . It is about a 16 year old illiterate girl who gave birth to two children from an absentee father. She lives with an abusive mother and is subjected to the most dire ridicule at her school. She has something inside her that lets her somehow hold on to her soul. She is given an opportunity to go to an alternative school. That is where her life changes.
The show is realistic and gritty. The movie trailer captures some riveting glimpses of the performances given by the actors.
Newcomer, Gabourey Sidibe, is already gaining acclaim for a performance that is so beyond her inexperience in the acting craft that it transcends the script when she brings the character of Precious to life. With most of her experience in acting coming from theater in school, Sidibe is actually quite surprised how acting has unfolded for her.
Gabourey Sidibe as Precious
Mo’Nique, known for her over the top comedy, has been reported to deliver an award worthy dramatic performance of the character Mary. This is Precious’ angry, abusive mother whose own self-hatred practically destroys her daughter.
Mo'Nique as Mary
Mariah Carey is also dolled down to what many are claiming is one of the better performances of the year of anyone. She is the surprise and this performance distances her away from such bombs as Glitter proves the talent that was always there.
The Precious Cast
Co- produced by Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey, who believed that by lending their names to this small film, it will get more of the needed attention it deserves.
Even though the writing on the show is dismal, there are definitely some big pluses to CW’s Teen prime time soap opera 90210. Newcomer, Trevor Donovan, is one of them. Entering as the golden boy, tennis star, Teddy Montgomery, Donovan sizzles up the TV screen with leading man qualities reminding us of a younger Brad Pitt.
The blond former Abercrombie Fitch model and Days of Our Lives star may be 90210′s only savior for a show already riddled with writing that is even below what guilty pleasure soap genre should be at….hopefully the audience can just turn off the sound and watch the eye candy. The new flavor is Trevor Donovan
This is my third year watching the riveting and what I consider the best written and well acted dramas on television today, BBC America’s Skins. It is an edgy, no hold barred look into the lives of young, urban youth in Great Britain.
There is a gritty, honesty to the plot lines that are so transparent in exposing what lies underneath the “skins” that we wear that borders on genius to me. The stories literally grab me and I love these characters. What is amazing is that in this third season, they have replaced nearly everyone in the original cast except for a couple of them. Literally, everyone else graduated and moved out of town.
Nothing has degraded in the new season. It has actually gotten better and the stories are even richer. This is mainly due to the diverse writing staff made up of talented teens and experienced older writers who keep the story viewpoint always from that of a young person. It is the key to the show’s success.
The New Boys of Skins
Skins should be used as a template for how to make good television and how to create good writing. It is a gem of a show that I hope continues for a few more seasons because, frankly, nothing much exists out there that even ranks close to it in terms of quality.
There are a couple of stand –out performances. Returning cast member, Kaya Scodelario, who plays the intelligent but slightly disturbed , Effy, brings such emotional depth to her role. She definitely is a break out star whose acting is not overwhelmed by her natural beauty.
Merveille Lukeba of Skins
Merveille Lukeba, who plays illegal immigrant, Thomas Tomone, is the strongest actor of the cast. He was introduced in the latest episode. He immediately steals every scene he is in as the very likable Thomas from the Congo who is trying to bring his family into Britain. He runs into the lowest forms of society and stills keeps a positive outlook on life. Lukeba is a superb actor who brings much to the role and there will be much buzz about this young man.
If you have not watched this show catch it on the BBC America. The season has already ended its run on BBC in Britain. Click here for the official web site: SKINS
