A Nation of Bullies

We have seen recent focus in the news media of heart breaking stories of young LGBT youths either being killed, committing suicide or being seriously injured all because of the effects of bullying.  As the debate on equality for the gay community continues to escalate and some of the rhetoric gets more volatile,  the trickle down effect often manifests itself in violent behavior on school grounds.

Bullying is really just another face of  Hate and is truly criminal.  What in popular culture has always been seen  as a rite of passage especially in terms of masculinity for a boy to ” man it up” when bullied,  the actual bullying mentality has become murderous especially against LGBT youth.

Society is currently debating the very standing, in terms of the very rights of the queer community, where even some of the more established religions of the day are taking an active political role in trying to marginalize this group through their opposition to equal rights.  It is no wonder why those who bully have somehow convinced themselves that there is an unspoken approval from legitimate society to attack, humiliate and even injure LGBT peoples.

Many of these young gay people lack support from school administrators, teachers and adult leaders who often place the blame of the bullying on the victim because of the victim’s differences that they say call on the attention of the bullies in the first place.  This further cements not only the level of bigotry that extends up to the adult level but also solidifies the vulnerability of the young person where their value and safety has no protection from those who should be their chief protectors.

Our children are dying and their blood is on our hands.

We have to continue our efforts on the Equality front but we must also get into these schools and protect them. Bullying should be a first strike and you are out offense in most cases.  No one should be the brunt of verbal or physical abuse because of who they are or how they inherently act simply because they do not fit a mold.

Never before do we need to get involved in our schools and youth organizations to make sure that LGBT youth are not being bullied to death.

There are organizations like:  It Gets Better Project – a series of  You Tube videos as part of  a campaign encouraging LGBT youth to hang in there through the bullying years.

Dan Savage and his partner started this project and has invited others to video taped their “It Gets Better” story, post it on You Tube and then send them the URL to be part of the campaign.  I invite others to do it.

Also,  we have to get into our schools and DEMAND  support and a NO TOLERANCE policy of bullying. We also need to make sure education and support is made.  Enough is Enough.

Pride in Salt Lake City

The "All Families Are Forever" float made a point about gay marriage. The Pride Parade wound it's way through the streets of Salt Lake City on Sunday. (Scott Sommerdorf / Salt Lake Tribune)

I was in town for other reasons but was happy to find out in was Pride in Salt Lake City, Utah.   There is something significant about an LGBT celebration of this kind in a state where the Mormon dominated population has headed some of the most aggressive negative campaigns across the country on issues like same sex marriage.

I came out years ago in Utah. I came out of  a marriage at a time where LGBT support was minimal and the atmosphere even more antagonistic.  I was able to find friendships through the underground gay bar and nightclub scene which in some cases had its own perils.

The Pride Parade wound it's way through the streets of Salt Lake City on Sunday, here marching north toward the State Capitol on State Street. (Scott Sommerdorf / Salt Lake Tribune)

I even went to a Pride celebration years ago there where a small parade and a little  festival were held.

Today, I am happy to report that the LGBT community and it’s straight supporters are larger and stronger.  Salt Lake City has been perhaps the most liberal enclave for the gay community in the entire state of Utah.  There are still challenges and the influence of the Mormon Church cannot be denied.

However, there is a thriving LGBT center. The festival is much larger and is attended more by the larger community and the parade has become an even bigger event.

There is also this unique strength that you see in the LGBT community here.  It is sure courage and resolve, that despite the odds, they have been able to win some battles here and there for domestic partnerships in the city.  It is even being considered statewide.  The recent Prop 8 initiative in California even saw a split within the church membership on the issue as members separated church from state in their voting habits.

I believe that one of the great stories for the battle for equality for the LGBT community will come out of Salt Lake City.  Here is where the battle is so organic and real. People put everything on the line here.  There is less underground now and more openness in this city.   Pride 2010 in Salt Lake City with it’s theme of “Our History, Our Future” resonated a message that greater things are yet to come.

A quote from the Salt Lake Tribune:

“Jocelyn Johnson and Denise Druce sported Equality Utah T-shirts as they hung out near the parade’s end on 300 South. Druce’s husband and sons Van, 5, and Bode, 7, had marched, too.

For two women who had grown up in the LDS culture in less accepting times, they are determined to see their children grow up without prejudice.

“I value diversity so much, and I want them to know diversity,” she said.

“Jesus said, ‘Love one another,’” she added, “and I don’t remember him making any exceptions.”

Johnson, who grew up in northern Utah farm country and did not come out as a lesbian until after she had moved away, said she came back seven years ago so her daughter could come to know the caring and genuine people of Johnson’s childhood. But she also found a much larger LGBT community than she had expected.” ( Pride Parade Draws a Throng , by Judy Fahys, The Salt Lake Tribune 6/7/2010)

I had the opportunity to go out to some of the local establishments and here are clips of some of the performances I saw:

8: The Mormon Proposition – New Documentary on Religious Political Bigotry

Mormbook

Powered with cash and a built in well oiled organized group of followers, with a theocracy based on obedience to God’s one and only true prophet of God,  the Mormons ( the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) were the most influential religious body to exercise its financial and political muscle in California’s passage of proposition 8.

Not since its successful battle against the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment in the 70′s, has the Mormon or the LDS Church been as politically active in what it believes is its Heaven directed right to insure that homosexuality is not legally condoned or morally accepted in the United States. It is political will validated by religious belief.

Similar to the right wing fundamental christian extremists in desired results but with more sophistication, power and money.  They are also American born, bred, and headquartered- unlike the anti-gay Catholic Church which takes it orders from Rome.

In fact, the Mormons believe that the United States is a land of promise in a religious sense, and this only adds to their fervor to keep it morally upright according to their value system.  Scripturally rich, with both the King James Bible and the Book of Mormon as their main Holy texts centered on Jesus Christ, coupled with their belief in continuing revelation, the Mormons believe that God speaks to them today through their prophet.

Obedience to the prophet equals obedience to God.  Disobedience to the prophet equals …well you get the picture. Sure they believe and preach free will.  However, disobedience to God’s commandments can lead to lost of church membership. Homosexuality is one of those acts that tops that list.

8:  The Mormon Proposition is a documentary that  has currently been sent and making its round in some independent film festivals.  Its main goal is to illustrate the enormous influence that the LDS Church has  and continues to have in the opposition of same sex marriage in the United States.  It also shows the impact of religious interference in our modern democratic political process and the role of religious money.

There is also the propaganda that is used to dehumanize the LGBT community and the hate that is influenced and nutured from the pulpit and sermons.

The Man You Had In Mind

kwj

Still relevant today, James Tuchschmidt’s 2006 documentary “The Man You Had in Mind” explores the relationship stories of five gay couples in Oregon. It is shot with such simplicity and honesty that it catches the core essence of these relationships that are universal with their heterosexual counterparts. It also captures those things that are unique, especially when living under the shadow of an unaccepting society.

What is also moving in this film is to hear the stories about these couples through their friends and families. We often forget that they also have taken the journey with them.

The couples cover relationships barely a year old to one spanning 51 years. The film does not preach but it unveils the underlying truth through the lives of these men that their love of each other is real and ultimately valid.

The music with the same name as the film title plays as a backdrop through several parts of the film is by out musician Eric Himan.

I recommend it to anyone, gay or straight, to rent it and watch. Hopefully, it will bring more understanding.

Celebrating 40 Years of Pride Since Stonewall

On June 28, 1969  a series of demonstrations took place at the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village in New York City that was cited as the first time gays and lesbian fought back against government sponsored discrimination.

lgstonewall

With Gay Pride celebrations reaching its pinnacle in June, a new video has been released commemorating that event and the legacy of activism and history of the gay rights movement for 40 years by the LGBT community.

There has been a lot of progess but we still are in the midst of the biggest civil rights movement of our day.  Let us remember those brave souls of Stonewall and carry on the fight for equality!
