Lars and the Real Girl – A Work of Art

I recently watched a movie on DVD called Lars and the Real Girl. It  came out in 2007 and starred Ryan Gosling as Lars Lindstrom.  He plays this lonely and social recluse who lives in a reconverted garage/shed apartment near  where his brother and his brother’s wife reside in their home across the driveway.

Lars and the Real Girl

One day Lars orders a realistic life size sex doll. He lives in this delusion that she is his girlfriend that he met online. Lars never uses it for its intended purpose because they are good “christian” people. He introduces her to everyone.

The people in this small town and in his church comes to know of Lar’s delusion and play along with it to help him work through his issues. She becomes as real to them because they begin to see her through his eyes.

What comes about from all of this is one of the best films I have ever seen. Ryan Gosling has to be one of the best actors of his generation. The story is layered with so much human behavior and emotional touch points. The cast is perfectly on point with each other.

By the end of the movie, you find that you have been taken on a journey that leaves you glad that film is still an art form that lives on among a select group of film makers and actors.  I invite all to see this work of art.
