“Definitely, Maybe” (2008) starring Ryan Reynolds follows the life of a man and his loves as he recounts the stories of the women in his life to his daughter. This is done against the back drop of his daughter (played by Abigail Breslin) dealing with her dad and mom’s divorce and trying to understand why he would fall out of her love with her.
There are many things I like about this film. First of all, Ryan Reynolds, who is known for screwball comedies like the Van Wilder series, pulls off the dramatic role of Will Hayes very well. He us able to tone down the comedy just enough to pull out some real nuanced dramatic moments.
There are good actresses in this film like Elizabeth Banks and Rachel Weisz. However, the standout performance goes to Isla Fisher who plays the spirited April Hoffman. The chemistry between her and Reynolds is great. She steals the scenes she is in with her presence and great acting ability.
The only thing negative thing about this film is that I think it could have been edited better and that some scenes could have been shortened or eliminated. There were areas of the film that seemed to drag a little longer than it should have and did not add to the story.
All in all, “Definitely, Maybe” is still a definite must see! So rent it and enjoy!
