Outside of the United States, the frenzy over the upcoming World Cup in South Africa has captured most of the other countries of this planet in the very competitive world of Association Football ( or as we, Americans, like to term “soccer). The stars of these games gain more world status and fame then those who make headlines in our country. One of the more famous ones is Cristiano Ronaldo.
Born in the island of Madeira, Portugal, Ronaldo, gained notice by the time he was 12 years old that he had top skills in the sport. He began playing for the the Sporting team.
In 2003, in a game against Manchester United, when his team beat that powerhouse of a team, Sir Alex Ferguson ( that team’s manager) recruited him as their very first Portuguese player.
Controversy has surrounded him regarding his sportsmanship and even some of his contractual agreements. However, Ronaldo skills has garnered him several awards including PFA Young Player of the Year, PFA Player of the Year, PFA Fans’ Player of the Year, Portuguese Footballer of the Year, FWA Footballer of the Year, Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year and Manchester United’s Players’ Player of the Year. The year 2008 also saw him taking back the PFA Player Of The Year Award for the second time running.
With his competitive spirit, good looks and game antics he has garnered sex symbol status. He recently was featured with some controversy with other athletes in a World Cup themed photo spread in Vanity Fair.
