When I was a kid, one of my favorite Saturday morning cartoons was Super Friends. I admired these Super Heroes who formed the Justice League to fight against evil. What a group of friends they were -Superman, Batman, Aqua Man and Wonder Woman to name a few! No villain was a match for them. Their bond of friendship made their powers even greater and unbeatable.
One of the major realizations that came to me out of this past holiday season was how much my own friends have enriched my life. They may not have super powers. They are not super heroes in the traditional sense. They are definitely Super Friends to me!
I was able to connect with many of them face to face and through other forms of communication during the holidays. I would not be the person I am without their example and support. There were many times in my life that they would believe in me when I did not believe in myself.
There are friends that have known me only during certain seasons of my life. There are friends that have known and live with me through all of the valleys and hills of all seasons. There are a couple of them that I have just met in the last couple of months and during this Christmas season.
I cannot imagine my life without them. My memories would be so much less interesting and much less fonder. They are the gifts that are around me all year round. Thankfulness is such a weak word to describe what I feel when I think of these wonderful people.
I look now at 2009 with the assurance that whatever comes my way, my friends, these Super Friends, will be right there beside me. Now that is real strength. That is real power.
