Masks in the Dark

Masks in the Dark

by JP Leddy

Painted faces whip by me

Revelers enjoying the Halloween night

As flickering Jack ‘O Lanterns invite

from dark porches crisscrossed with cobwebs…

Everyone is someone else tonight

whether they be monsters or starlet

each are hidden behind a costume and

a false face muted in darkness…

The morning will come soon

some will return to their real selves

while others will simply not

but hide behind their masks inside…

  1. The morning will come soon

some will return to their real selves

    while others will simply not

but hide behind their masks inside

    …those lines speak volumes…nicely done.

  2. Started off with some nice rhymes, and the message at whole is so true–the mask often does feel so much better than a return to the real. Nice work!

  3. LOVED the last 2 lines the most!! It really summed it up so darned well, JP… and gave the poem a whole new dimension, I think! Awesome!
And that image is very spooky kinda!
