Celeste and Jesse Forever – Powerful Film, One Of The Best This Year

Andy Sandberg abd Rashida Jones

I actually did not know too much about this film when I went to go see it.  I did so with the recommendation of my friend, Andy. I also thought that the cast members Rashida Jones, Andy Samberg and Elijah Wood sounded like a good team.   What I got was one of the most moving and full movie experiences I have had in a long time.

The film on the surface is about a couple going through a divorce and trying to remain friends.  What you receive are journeys through love, loss, romance, friendship, jealousy, forgiveness, self-discovery, redemption and  ultimately happiness  but not in the usual hollywood ending way.   It is a film that uses humor  well without losing the very heavy themes of this gifted screenplay co-written by Rashida Jones and Will McCormack.

The film is much more than just about divorce and marriage. It is really deconstructs relationships and more about more about relationships and ourselves as people, our vulnerabilities, and our ownership of our own happiness.

Rashida Jones stands out in her role and delivers on of the best performances by an actress.  Andy Samberg showcases, again, that he is multi-talented handling comedy and drama with equal skill and mastery.    Supporting acting roles by Elijah Wood as the gay business partner of Rashida’s character, Will McCormack as Andy’s Pot smoking and dealing buddy and Ari Graynor as Rashida’s best friend are also delivered and performed well.

Celeste and Jesse Forever is one of those rare films today that shows the art that film can be where superior  actors can truly take their craft armed with a superb screenplay and great direction to deliver a masterpiece.  This film is 2012’s masterpiece.  Relevant to our day but eternal as a film for all ages.

So in the midst of all the summer blockbusters , take a moment to enjoy this jewel of a film.
