Even with their strongest teammates leaving due to injuries ( the Hamm brothers), the USA Men’s Gymnastics Team took the lead in the first rounds of team competition on Saturday in Beijing.  Jonathan Horton also was leading in the individual standings. Sasha Artemev ( who also placed 3rd in the individual standings)  and Raj Bhavsar were brought into the team to replace the Hamms a couple of days ago.  Bhavsar also showed strong performances. Joseph Hagerty, Justin Spring and Kevin Tan are the other U.S. gymnasts.

The Americans should not be counted out as strong medal contenders even against the the formidable Chinese, Japanese and Russians. This kind of story is the makings of true Olympic drama.
